The international art critic Alfred Werner once wrote, “ Byron Browne was a silent poet: he spoke in pigments alone.” Browne strongly believed that art was a separate language begun on the walls of caves eons ago and he insatiably mined archaic, antique and primitive art forms in search of universal symbols. Pablo Picasso, who also had far flung artistic antecedents, was also an important inspiration. Browne joined the important American Abstract Artists group in 1938. Many abstract artists were painting their anger and frustration at the advent of the nuclear age, but Browne’s non-objective works are steadfastly disciplined and lyrical. Browne insisted that mastery of the figure was the artist’s most meaningful challenge and his own highly expressive figural work inventively reprises classical antiquity. An instructor of painting at the Art Student’s League in New York, Browne was teaching at New York University when he died at the age of 54.
