A major figure in Twentieth Century art, Philip Howard Francis Dixon Evergood was an accomplished etcher, lithographer, illustrator and writer.  In Europe Evergood met  Utrillo and Pascin as well as Signac, Bourdelle, Man Ray and Foujita. In 1930-31 he studied printmaking with Stanley William Hayter in Paris. After living extensively in Europe he returned to New York in the early ‘thirties and quickly became a leader of Social Commentary art along with Ben Shahn and Jack Levine. However he was not a Social Realist. Living in downtown New York lofts he frequented the famous John Reed Club forums and became knowledgeable about jazz, meeting many important jazz musicians. He won many prestigious awards and exhibited in the Venice Biennale in 1948. His solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art traveled to museums around the country. He also received a solo Exhibition at TheTate Gallery in London.
