Robert Goodnough began to make abstract drawings at an early age, but he did not pursue an art career seriously until after he served in World War I.  The Europeans Amedee Ozenfont and Hans Hofmann influenced his abstract style. After making collages in 1953 he began to construct birds, dinosaurs and human figures.  In his paintings he adopted a cubist mode in an attempt to create a space that neither receded nor advanced, but which consisted of a spatial relationship among figures on a single plane. In the 1960s Goodnough painted large forms with smooth edges or clusters of hard edge shapes on vast light filled grounds. His New York dealers have included Tibor
De Nagy and Andre Emmerich in New York.
